A little Claire McCardell inspiration goes a long way in the hands of Roksanda Ilincic, who turned up the volume on traditional American sportswear this season. The monastic dress — a shiftlike look with loose sleeves — was a McCardell staple, as were oversize patch pockets and pronounced buttons. They were all reimagined by Ilincic in color-blocked neon viscose, a hearty jersey and an interesting plastic-coated wool that resembled crinkled leather. Plaid was the sole print and Ilincic showed it in numerous sizes, often mixing them together in a single garment while playing with ruching and belted waists to give shape to the mostly midi lengths.
