Their “belated honeymoon” in Rome guided Mark Badgley and James Mischka for pre-fall. More specifically, they channeled the museums’ and palazzos’ golden hues, baroque textures and rich fabrics for a look that was part monastic, part young Gina Lollobrigida. A simple black column gown, for example, was almost Gothic in shape but its shoulder line was embellished with crystals and gold sequins. A similar silhouette was decked out in stones and sequins in a pattern that mimicked mosaics at the Vatican.

While the details were elaborate, Badgley and Mischka maintained a light touch, right down to the feathery weight of a sequined and flocked tulle for an off-the-shoulder cocktail number.
