Henri Matisse’s bold color blocks and cutouts served as inspiration for Daniella Helayel’s Issa collection. “I have a book of his collages, and it occurred to me that Matisse is very, very Issa,” she quipped. Thus her prints of palm tree fronds and ferns ran throughout, while as version of Matisse’s “Blue Nude” was shown on silk scarves. The color palette sizzled with tangerine, hot pink and fire-engine red, tempered with a bold Matisse-y blue and cool raspberry. And while there were plenty of Issa’s signature jersey dresses, more constructed pieces were included, too such as a sleeveless, cross-hatch printed circle skirt worn with a belted coat, as well as a skirt suit with collarless jacket.
