Cynthia Rowley knows a good cross-promotional opportunity when she see one. On July 11, her art retail site Exhibition A will release three limited edition prints by artist Josh Smith. So what better time than now to design a resort collection inspired by Smith’s life-size dinosaur painting, currently on view at the Brant Foundation Art Study Center in Greenwich, Conn.? The lineup stuck to Smith’s playful style, riffing off his childlike painterly strokes in, for instance, an embroidery motif overlaid with scribblelike plastic ribbon. “It’s meant to look like you took a highlighter and scratched all over the traditional embroidery,” explained Rowley, who also worked the prehistoric motif in abstract bone and bloom patterns as well as jewelry shaped like ancient scarabs or oversize fangs. But for all those amusing touches, Rowley kept resort fairly relaxed and easy with loose day dresses, T-shirts and roomy pants. Equally nonchalant were the silk scarves emblazoned with a bandana print and a cotton head wrap-cum-visor.
