Christopher Bailey’s story this season began with a series of vintage Helmut Newton photographs. He served up body-con dresses, peekaboo fabrics and that sharp-cut pencil skirt he was so fond of for fall. But ever the British gentleman, he turned the reference on its ear, offering elegant peplum sheaths and myriad skirts in sweet pastel-colored English laces crafted at the only remaining lace factory in the U.K. The pieces will, of course, be sold with linings, but with a wink they will be removable, offering customers the opportunity to be naughty or nice as the mood strikes. For those looking to cover up a bit more, the trenchcoat was on full display in classic as well as cropped lengths, often embellished with clusters of glass beads. Bailey also had a little Audrey Hepburn on his mind, manifested in beautiful bow details on the backs of evening gowns and boatneck collars on suiting, as well as classic cashmere sweaters ranging from whisper thin to hearty with embellishment.
