Fantasy Land Backstage at Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

South America, beetles, “Avatar” and (especially) Mexico were the themes given by the designer to makeup artist Tom Pecheux for his couture beauty look.

South America, beetles, “Avatar” and (especially) Mexico were the themes given by Jean Paul Gaultier to makeup artist Tom Pecheux for the designer’s couture beauty look. Models’ eyelids were painted the bugs’ incandescent colors, including blue, green, orange and yellow. Lips had a metallic sheen as well, and were coated in tones such as burgundy, brownish red and brownish orange.

“It’s a full-on fantasy,” said Pecheux.

Hairstylist Odile Gilbert, meantime, took a cue for coifs from Mexico, the conquistadors and Jane Campion’s film “The Piano Lesson.” Braids abounded in numerous iterations, including cornrows. Gilbert’s fantastic creations involved intricate updos with plaits of various widths and design. Some models had sculpturelike pieces (made of braids) affixed to their heads and a few sported extraordinary hats to top it all off.
