The flower-themed artisanal creations at Maison Martin Margiela were as vibrant as a lineup of bouquets in a cheap and cheerful dime store. Rosettes of cotton bandanas or Liberty fabric flowers were pieced together to form voluminous bodices in an explosion of Bollywood colors. For the finale, the wrapper was peeled off the bouquet and stapled around the body to form transparent evening gowns, an idea reminiscent of the cellophane hats seen in John Galliano’s couture display for Christian Dior last season. But here, the statement felt a little empty after the Technicolor burst that preceded it.
