JW Anderson Launches His Women’s Collection

Jonathan Anderson, the designer behind men’s wear label JW Anderson, took to the screen to launch his first women’s collection this week.

INSTANT GRATIFICATION: Jonathan Anderson, the designer behind men’s wear label JW Anderson, took to the screen to launch his first women’s collection this week.

Photographer Sharif Hamza directed the film, which shows models inhabiting a psychedelic, dream-like world inspired by William Gedney’s photography. Anderson said his team achieved the blurry blue, red, and gold light refractions on the screen by “shooting through Swarovski crystals, and tanks of water filled with Dylon dyes.”

Known for his chunky knitwear and use of heritage fabrics, Anderson said he decided to launch women’s wear after buyers told him that women were buying his men’s pieces, and private clients asked him to re-size his men’s wear for women.

“We do the men’s first, and then take the looks and fit them on to women,” said Anderson. The young-spirited collection — which also has a grungy, folksy feel — includes dip-dyed tops with lace appliqués, chunky sweaters and chiffon skirts.

Customers won’t have to wait until spring to sample the designs: Liberty has posted the film on its YouTube site, and already carries selected pieces from the spring collection at its Regent Street flagship and online.
