Everything at Dennis Basso was different from seasons past. To begin with, instead of The Pierre hotel, Basso chose to show in his store with presentations and lunch for individual editors. Then, there were the younger and more charming furs, shown only as accents, over the best collection of evening dresses he has done since he began designing ready-to-wear in 2005. “I wanted this collection to be both playful and sophisticated, with the glamour of Monte Carlo,” said Basso. A tall order, but he filled it with the simplest shapes rendered in the most glamorous fabrics — long or short ombréd paillette dresses or silk chiffon full-skirted silhouettes; bugle-beaded lean sack looks and hand-crocheted silk sheaths in navy or gray. “People don’t have to come here for a blazer — they come for something special,” Basso explained. And this season they got it with an added dose of elegance.
