For her first runway show, Tory Burch sent out a confident collection full of Twenties charm. Burch was inspired by seeing the play “Gatz” (a marathon reading of “The Great Gatsby”), Picasso’s “The Bathers” and Jacques Henri Lartigue’s photographs of Deauville. Those roaring years proved a strong starting point, which the designer channeled wisely into a diverse collection of wearable clothes that was not without some risk, such as bold raffia embellishments. Burch’s colors centered mostly on seafoam green and corals, with light floral patterns to enhance the feminine feel. For day, Burch teamed such looks as gold ribbed sweaters with chiffon and lamé skirts. It was also interesting to see her amp up her cocktail and evening range, with sequined dresses and tops in a blue-and-white wave pattern, and flowing silk chiffon dresses. Now that Burch has opened a Madison Avenue flagship with ample space and is rapidly expanding her business worldwide, it was a savvy and welcome move for the contemporary designer to think beyond day clothes and accessories. It all made for a pretty mix — including her fun new bags, like a raffia model that was perfect for a stroll along a seaside promenade.
