Scott Sternberg’s jumping off point was a heady one — the Japanese cult film “Battle Royale” — and much could go wrong, but this designer knows how to get the best out of an inspiration without knocking you over the head. Out came the gorgeous shibori textiles (a method of dyeing cloth by binding, folding, stitching and compressing to create a print, texture or weave) that were fashioned into an ivory knitted dress in one look, a perfectly cut blazer over a plunging V-neck dress in another. The movie’s military motif rang truer to Sternberg’s typical fare — epaulets on jackets, and pants bound around the ankles with ties. Still, the fluid fabrics and lace-up flat sandals done in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik gave the collection a real sense of ease.
