Richard Chai’s show got off to a strong start with several appealing looks that remained true to the DNA of his Richard Chai Love women’s brand — youthful and sporty, with the right touch of sexy. Several cutout minidresses, a floral-print bra top teamed with a striped A-line skirt and a sleeveless pastel blue parka all struck an appropriate summer note. Less so, perhaps, did Chai’s move into drab colors such as brown, gray and taupe as the collection progressed. It was refreshing, though, to see the designer play up evening with embroidered and sequined dresses and T-shirts featuring a cool hologram digital print.
Richard Chai Men’s, meanwhile, continued his exploration of athletic references, transparencies and playful volumes. The head-to-toe monochromatic looks were clean, if somewhat flat; the collection worked best when Chai added colorblocking in T-shirts, pants and jackets. And though the effort exuded fluidity and ease, it ultimately felt a little light on ideas.
