Primary colors as bold as traffic lights clashed with graphic zebra stripes as the models at Issey Miyake zigzagged across the runway in head-to-toe geometrics, giving new meaning to crosstown traffic.
Striped and color-blocked reversible coats and jackets were bonded from different fabrics to create transparency effects, as on a red blazer with a black-and-white striped lining, worn over matching cycling shorts. Creative director Yoshiyuki Miyamae said the collection was inspired by images of birds alighting on water, a look simulated by striped sweaters whose stretchy ribs bounced with every step. Under the light reflected by the foil catwalk, they appeared to shimmer like the sun on the ocean.
But any other references to nature were hard to detect in this lineup, which instead brought to mind the colorful outfits worn by urban bike messengers — especially the wide-legged blue pants with white racer stripes running down their sides.
