From its electric hues to its speedy pace, Junya Watanabe’s early morning show was a jolt of energy. That was probably intentional. At the core, the designer worked an activewear theme with a Space Age bent, which for the most part offered an edgy take on gym garb, including pieces from a new collaboration with Puma.
Watanabe made the case for sporty with the first few outings: cool running gear graphically sliced with mesh in yellow and green neons that called to mind Spiderman — these were clothes for climbing walls.
The athletic spirit turned more subtle at times, as in a terrific double-breasted gray jacket with navy inserts on the sleeves, and dresses featuring open zippers to expose contrasting mesh. Some looks were worn with biker pants.
As for the Puma collaboration, there were techy jackets, coats and dresses. The high-top sneakers were striking, but not part of this collection. Speaking of styling, the models’ faces were painted white and their helmetlike headgear was spiked, studded and designed to resemble metallic comb-overs. They all played into the lineup’s futuristic feel.
