Designer Kunihiko Morinaga opened his show by sending out his girls in glow-in-the-dark cage-like dresses, recalling the film “Tron.” In what was one of the more dramatic Tokyo shows of the season- at least so far- he deftly mined geometric and architectural references. The assortment of laser-cut garments, including dresses, a trench and an elegant skirt and jacket combo were particularly intriguing and looked fresh. Tamer fare like sundresses in floral or gingham were placed under lattice structures for added interest. Unfortunately, the bizarre and questionable move to paint the models’ faces entirely in black make-up proved distracting from an otherwise strong show.
