Adam Selman, the designer behind Rihanna’s River Island collection, created quite a frenzy with the downtown fashion crowd Thursday evening. He presented his debut lineup via a mock photo shoot, with models being primped and styled, hair fluffed and makeup retouched.

Did the clothes live up to the hype? Yes and no. A bow-topped bralette paired with black pleated shorts was fun and flirty, while a light blue slitted slipdress with black piping sizzled.

The athletic silk separates — T-shirts and shorts, and a dress cut to look like a hockey jersey — felt a bit too familiar, while the white lace-up swimsuit and black silk slipdress with white binding offered hints of sophistication — and left us wanting to see more.
