What do you get when you cross gingham school uniforms with the luxuriant flora and fauna of a Henri Rousseau painting? Perhaps Indian designer Rahul Mishra’s spring offering, which seemed to emerge straight from the pages of a children’s pop-up book with its 3-D charm.

The palette started fairly simply, combining black, red or blue checks with floating yellow silk, crisp white voile layers and pale blue cotton shirts, with subtle embroideries adding a hint of whimsy, as on a pair of yellow silk cropped palazzo pants twinned with a hand-embroidered trenchcoat and gingham belt, or a red gingham asymmetric ruffled dress worn with a voile shirt with matching embroideries.

Then came a black and white sweatshirt with 3-D embroideries jumping off the shoulders as if coming to life, a motif that was repeated in glorious colors in the final statement pieces of this striking, beautifully crafted and sustainably minded collection.
