Mother of Pearl set up a “gift shop” at its art gallery venue and invited guests to help themselves to glossy tomes about artists like David Hockney and Caravaggio that inspired creative director Amy Powney’s strong see-now-buy-now collection for spring (there was a pointy-elbowed scrum after the show).

Powney loves a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor and the wry images of photographer Martin Parr appeared on mock newspapers carried by the models and informed pieces like a blue padded anorak, gold puffer coat silk pajama suits in deckchair stripes.

Hockney’s vibrant paintings and penchant for including tulips in many of his works were referenced in pops of luminous blue and yellow, and tulip prints, which looked especially nice in a standout yellow dress with long sleeves.

The notion of an idyllic summer picnic in the British countryside was the big theme here. Such a scene from “A Room With a View” inspired Victorian elements like poet blouses and silk scarves tucked into the necklines of tops and dresses. Picnic blanket checks of various sizes were layered together and looked terrific in a roomy red coat worn over a red plaid dress. Driving the point home, handbags were crafted to look like rolled-up picnic rugs, complete with blanket fringing.
