Taking its name from Elkann’s nickname Laps, the eclectic and bold “Laps Collection” is inspired by Elkann’s different passions, including art, cars and the timeless, sophisticated design of Made in Italy icons.
“With the Laps Collection I wanted to give something of myself. Something special, unique just like you. A collection that goes straight to the heart. I wanted to seek deep inside myself, to turn the passions that have always guided my companies into products. To do this, I brought you into my thoughts, my days, my work, the deep recesses of my heart,” said Elkann. “Like all Italia Independent creations, the ‘Laps Collection’ is characterized by the high quality of the materials used, the refined design and an all-consuming attention to detail. A collection that influences and is influenced by different worlds, all united by a deep love for beauty. I am proud that these products have become reality and am excited to see them worn. This collection is heart, passion, determination and research.”
Organized in three families, each of them is inspired by a specific theme, and the collection counts 12 sunglasses and five optical frames.
Entirely manufactured in Japan, the Art family includes lightweight titanium designs featuring linear shapes inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, such as the Keith showing a trapezoidal front.
The Automotive group, which is produced in South Korea, features aluminum styles for contemporary male drivers. Also coming with polarized lenses, they include the Lawyer model, a shield frame punctuated by metallic details.
The years of Italian Dolce Vita served as inspiration for the Vintage Icons range, including acetate frames worked in timeless silhouettes.
“Eleven years on from its inception, Italia Independent still believes in its founding values, summed up in its very name: Italy represents the DNA and the starting point for the creation of each and every product and project, while ‘independence’ is the condition needed to express the ultimate in terms of innovation, style and creativity,” said Italia Independent chief executive officer Giovanni Carlino. “Today, more than ever before, the challenge lies in updating these values and in making the past coexist with the future, in an increasingly connected and continuously evolving present. With this collection, Italia Independent has proved, once again, that it is a company that can run fast and transform its values into unique products.”
The “Laps Collection,” which will retail from 197 euros to 297 euros, will hit Italia Independent stores, select fashion retailers and opticians, as well as e-commerce platforms from the end of June.
While Elkann will present the collection to press on June 28 with a special event on a tramway in Milan, he will also front an advertising campaign.
In conjunction with the launch of the “Laps Collection,” Italia Independent donated a range of children’s frames to Elkann’s charity Laps Foundation, focused on the support of children who are victims of abuse or who require special educational assistance.
Founded in 2007, Italia Independent was listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2013.
