After creating jewelry with the Tony Duquette estate and a line of bags and small leather goods with London-born artist Hugo Guinness, Coach tapped Sui to interpret the brand’s Duffle Sac, which it first offered in 1972. Sui’s design will come in two versions, which she will unveil at her fall runway show Wednesday.

“The idea was to work with an iconic American designer that had an affinity to Coach and Coach’s heritage,” said Reed Krakoff, Coach Inc.’s president and executive creative director. “When I think of her and her accessories, I think of these amazing leather goods shops from the Sixties and Seventies with these amazing Whipstitched bags and hand-burnishings, and so it was a great fit. And she was great fun to work with.”

Sui said, “Coach’s iconic Duffle handbag represents such a significant part of their history. It’s truly an honor to put my own spin on this seminal design. The Anna Sui version adds a boho feeling with Whipstitching, big tassels and appliquéd Art Nouveau dragonflies.”

Sui designed a fleur-de-lis vegetable-tanned, hand-burnished leather version of the Duffle, as well as a dragonfly one, which comes with her printed twill lining. Both are limited in edition, numbered, with details such as an interior wristlet that can be removed. Prices were not available at press time. The bags will launch at select Coach boutiques and in the fall.
