Coinciding with the niche bag brand’s fifth birthday, Corto Moltedo’s Gabrielecorto Moltedo recently opened his first Paris boutique, sandwiched between the Shiseido and Pierre Hardy stores in Palais Royal.

The 31-year-old son of Bottega Veneta founders Laura and Vittorio Moltedo designed the space himself, transforming wooden art crates into merchandising units, and using the same pale plywood to line an area dedicated to showcasing the line’s archive of “Susan” minaudières, which will be available for custom order in the store. Other unique touches include a Seventies-era jukebox the designer picked up in Florence and a school of painted fish moving across the store’s ceiling — crafted from paintbrush handles — courtesy of artist Federico Uribe. Moltedo says he plans to rotate art installations in the store and its windows.

Moltedo has no butterflies about entering the retail game during such gloomy times. “I think it’s great, what better way to show your own point of view, both for showing how the bags should be exhibited and showcasing some of the more creative designs,” says Moltedo, who declined to comment on the brand’s sales.
