For retailer Joelle Klein, the decision to open a second outpost of her curated Montauk boutique, *Share with…Montauk, was a no-brainer.
“I have been friends with The Broome Hotel NYC owners Jean-Claude and Stephane Iacovelli and Vincent Boitier for many years. We share a common sensibility and philosophy in what we wish to bring to our customers: a sense of welcome, and warmth.”
She said in their effort to promote local businesses, Iacovelli and Boitier knew she was doing the same in her 750 square-foot Montauk space and that she could scale down and urbanize the same idea for the small retail space in the hotel. Called *Share with…The Broome, it is located at 431 Broome Street in Manhattan.
The tiny alcove shop — just 120 square feet — is a few steps up from the lobby of the hotel. It stocks a range of accessories and gift items, including a bevy of small independent designers such as Naïs lingerie, Tracy Watts hats, Tracy Tanner small leather goods and Tata Harper organic skin care.
Klein said she hopes to reach sales of $100,000 in the first year in Manhattan. The Montauk store generates $300,000 per season.
For her grand opening, Klein has partnered with Brooklyn-based design agency Plusign to create the 5 Boroughs T-shirts and sweatshirts line, each with a distinct typeface meant to evoke the flavor of the different boroughs of New York City.
She extended the idea, and partnered with artist-cum-jewelry maker Matt Swope, who created a series of necklaces meant to go with each borough. According to Swope, the pieces, which are mainly leather bib styles and layered oversize stone necklaces, are “meant to evoke abstract random visuals one observes in everyday city life, such as graffiti tags, cabs passing by, an arrow for the stock market, candies on the boardwalk and an angel as a nod to Latino culture.”
Even Banksy gets a nod as a bib necklace with a plastic layer over recycled leather is inspired by plastic over the artist’s work at West 79th Street and Broadway.
The pieces are limited editions and range in price from $195 to $225.
