These days, jewelry designers are all ears. Not since the craze for the chandelier style in the early Aughts has the earring been the focus of so much attention.
Among the autumn offerings, asymmetry in particular is shaping up to be a big trend. Dior’s take is a mismatched pair; though each piece was made with gold-plated metal, glass and crystal beads, their designs are disparate and they hang at different lengths. Saint Laurent’s oversize, downward-pointing arrows have a throwback feel to them — like an old-time neon sign — while Céline’s golden sculptural hoops are equal parts paper clip and work of art. Speaking of sculpture: Stella McCartney is showing a series of eclectic enameled pieces that resemble miniature Calder mobiles. Each is meant to be worn singly — another version of the asymmetric look.
