New York-based fine jewelry brand Alison Lou is celebrating a marked year.
Founded by Alison Chemla, the whimsical brand launched a spin-off line of Lucite hoop earrings called Loucite in April 2018. The sell-out range of costume styles has increased the label’s business by 40 percent — offering more of the brand’s 100,000 Instagram followers a way to buy in. Today, Alison Lou has issued an anniversary collection of bright Loucite hoops, available in 10 colors.
“Loucite has brought in a new demographic, it speaks to so many more people who want to buy jewelry. It’s an easy, everyday wear and it’s easy to spot — I can see people on the street wearing it. People who have bought Loucite, we see more and more that their second order from us is fine jewelry,” Chemla said of the diffusion line, priced from $125 to $265.
On the other end of the spectrum, Chemla has seen increased interest in custom fine jewelry orders — also bolstering her business. This year, she created custom engagement ring designs for Jennifer Lawrence and Emily Ratajkowski — driving other would-be brides and grooms to consult her on ceremonial jewelry.
“That side of the business has grown 100 percent. I wasn’t making engagement rings before this now, and it’s something I’m definitely focusing on now as another part of business. In a year or so we’ll try to release a permanent collection and find a niche within the market,” Chemla said of the category.
She now sells direct-to-consumer out of her Upper East Side store and studio as well as through her e-commerce site. The label will participate in a Los Angeles pop-up shop with dress brand HVN and loungewear company Liana Clothing (designed by Chemla’s sister, Lili) at 8476 Melrose Avenue throughout the entire month of June.
