FRIENDS IN COMMERCE: Melissa Joy Manning believes in the creative community amongst jewelers. So much so that she opened her Wooster Street store doors to host the first annual pop-up shop for the jewelry designers of the CFDA. “I like to draw creative energy from other people, especially those designers I admire. I wanted to create a retail space that designers could tell their stories to their clients; jewelry is a personal talisman and you create a more meaningful experience when you connect with them directly.” She proposed the concept at one of the monthly meetings the new CFDA community now holds. It was a unanimous “yes” from the members.
Participating in the three-day event at Manning’s SoHo store were jewelers Dezso by Sara Beltrán, Stephen Dweck, Scosha, Ex Ovo, Janis Savitt, Dean Harris and Lisa Salzer of Lulu Frost. Salzer, who was meeting Manning for the first time for the event, said she was connected to the event through Simon Alcantara and Talya Cousins who initially conceived of the first CFDA jewelry showcase. “They opened up that spirit of sharing. I’ve found that the jewelry world in New York is very kind and supportive, being in the CFDA confirmed this for me.”
The designers and/or a rep from their brand will be on hand to work with the customers one-on-one, the direct-to-consumer approach they all agreed was crucial for their business. Said Alcantara, “From you, they get a clear vision of your line.”
