PARIS — With just one week to go until the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, the French Riviera town has again fallen prey to jewelry thieves.
Cartier confirmed that a heist took place at its boutique on the seafront Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes on Tuesday. Nobody was hurt and no further details were available, said an official at the jewelry house, saying it was waiting for the result of a police inquiry.
Local media reports said four masked men brandishing handguns broke into the store at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday and grabbed jewels from display cases. The store has already been robbed several times, most recently in 2009 when three armed men fled with a haul estimated at up to 15 million euros, or $20.9 million at the time.
Security has been stepped up in Cannes since a spate of heists took place during and after the festival in 2013, with targets including Chopard and De Grisogono.
