HONG KONG — Indian jeweler Nirav Modi put down his first roots in mainland China, opening a Beijing store at the Peninsula Hotel on Tuesday.
While Modi’s previous boutique openings have held considerable celebrity wattage — actress Zhang Ziyi and the pop star Rain were at the ceremony for his Hong Kong store unveiling last year — the Tuesday event was low-key and kept for clients.
The Beijing location is the company’s ninth shop — having already set up in New York, London, Macau, and two more each in Hong Kong and India.
“The Chinese customer is changing the face of luxury retail industry all over the world…” Modi said. “The boutique in Beijing is our first one in China and we have more boutique launches in China planned over the next few years.”
Out of the 100 stores Modi wants to open by 2025, around 30 are planned for China, with e-commerce eventually set to be part of the plan, too. Next, Modi has his eyes on expanding into Bangalore, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Singapore and Taipei.
