EAGERLY SEEKING CREATORS: Always on the hunt for talented designers, Ylang 23 and TrendSeeder are staging a competition Aug. 23 at the Ace Hotel in New York.
The Next Now: An Open Call for Emerging Jewelry Designers is the brainchild of Alysa Teichman, daughter of Ylang 23 co-owners Joanne and Charles Teichman. She joined the company three weeks ago as vice president of business development.
“My mom has always loved mentoring emerging jewelry designers, and for a while we’ve talked about how we can formalize that process and come up with a cool, fun event to find the next great jewelry designer,” Alysa Teichman explained. “We’re really excited about the panel [of judges] we built.”
They include designers Steven Alan and Melissa Joy Manning, TrendSeeder cofounder Avani Patel and Town & Country accessories director Will Kahn.
Interested designers can begin the process by applying at thenextnow.us.
The winner will sell baubles on ylang23.com, get 10 hours of mentoring each from Joanne Teichman and Manning, receive a year of membership in TrendSeeder and have the opportunity to present to Steven Alan.
Anyone who has previously sold to Ylang 23 or Steven Alan or shown at multiple trade shows is not eligible, Alysa Teichman pointed out.
“We’re really looking for designers that are emerging,” she said. “We hope we can get some very under-the-radar designers who might have Etsy stores or be students at Parsons. We think there is so much talent that is out there that we’ve never heard from or seen.”
TrendSeeder will also have an eye out for new talent.
“We’re always looking for opportunities for emerging fashion and beauty companies to help them in any way we can and foster their growth,” Patel said. “A good example is Naadam Cashmere, which has built a business in the middle of the Mongolian desert.”
TrendSeeder just inked JGold Cosmetics — its first beauty venture — which makes fillable cases for carrying multiple cosmetics.
