WATCH THIS: Encinitas, Calif.-based accessories brand Nixon will debut its first smartwatch this year.

The company today disclosed specifications of the unisex watch that appears to be an evolution of the company’s more tech-savvy watch offerings that have been released in recent years and the start of additional endeavors in the smart product space for Nixon.

The Mission watch runs on Google Android Wear with apps aimed at the action sports enthusiast with the ability to track surf and snow conditions and as well as activity in the water or on the mountain. The waterproof watch also boasts a full-color digital display.

“We wanted to make our entrance into the smart category in a disciplined and purposeful way by bringing functions that are useful and true to our DNA and action sports heritage,” ceo Nick Stowe said.

Stowe went on to call the rollout of Mission, expected this year, as one part of “a family of smart products to come.”

The watch, which starts at $400, will be sold in Nixon stores and its online site as well as select retailers of which the company declined to provide specifics on citing pending contracts. Purchasers will have the option of customizing their watch online with the option to choose their own finish as well as bezel and wristband colors.
