NEW YORK — Rescue Beauty Lounge owner Ji Baek knows nails, but now she’s broadening her expertise with a line of bath and body products launching in Barneys New York stores nationwide next week.

“As a retailer, it was hard to find a specific line dedicated to body that made sense to me,” said Baek of her decision to create the range.

The line consists of five products: Body Wash, Exfoliating Body Wash, Body Lotion, Body Cream and Hand Cream, ranging in price from $20 to $68. They are all scented with Citrus Vert, which features top notes of mandarin and lemongrass, middle notes of basil and freesia and bottom notes of ylang-ylang and cedar.

Each product, except the Body Cream, is available in large and travel sizes. The travel sizes are 5.1 oz., while the family sizes range between 15 oz. and 23 oz., depending on the product.

Providing convenient size options was very important to Baek. “In my own household, I feel like I’m constantly replenishing,” she said of her decision to create the jumbo “family size” products. The 23-oz. bottles save space and eliminate the need to constantly restock, she said.

And, as a busy New Yorker herself, Baek wanted to provide options for consumers. “My husband travels a lot and his biggest complaint is that if [the travel size] is in a tube, it explodes,” she said. (For the record, Rescue Beauty’s travel sizes come in sturdy plastic bottles.) “I don’t travel a lot, but I do go to the gym a lot, and it’s so hard to find that perfect size.”

Practicality wasn’t the only thing on Baek’s mind. The products are swathed in a vibrant foil gold and orange floral pattern, which was inspired by Fifties wallpaper, she said. “One day, I was looking into my bathroom and it looked like a big newspaper — everything was so clean and modern. I thought, there’s nothing wrong with being a little soft, a little elegant. It’s like bringing in a bit of retro, but with a new twist.”

Baek has a few other things on tap for later this year and beyond, including several new scents of the bath and body products. Spice Floral and Wild Rosemary Pamplemousse scents are planned for fall and holiday 2005, respectively, and an antibacterial hand wash, a body scrub and a body oil spray are also in development. The Rescue Beauty Lounge bath and body range will also be available at Rescue Beauty’s two New York locations and on rescuebeauty.com. Industry sources expect the line to do up to $1.5 million in first-year retail sales.
