Kiehl’s Adds New Touches With Hong Kong Store
HONG KONG — Kiehl’s is shining a lot of light on its newest store here.

The L’Oréal-owned brand has described the location, a 1,300-plus-square-foot store at Festival Walk mall, as a glass house. The freestanding shop is situated in a former exhibition space and is encased in glass with views of lush Hong Kong hillsides — a rare sight in this densely populated city.

The design concept is unique to Festival Walk because the mall itself has exterior glass walls, Kiehl’s noted. U.S.-based architectural firm Arquitectonica, along with Dennis Lau and Ng Chun Man Architects of Hong Kong, oversaw the shop design. Even with the modern touches, the shop retains a classic feel thanks to hardwood floors and vintage-styled wallpaper.

The glass-house shop was able to integrate elements that wouldn’t fit into three other Kiehl’s shops in Hong Kong, the company said. These include a crystal chandelier, a consultation area outfitted with a sink and marble table, a gift-wrapping center and a reference book area for perusal only. The store also has gone high-tech with two so-called iPorts. At these spots in the store, customers can listen to iPods playing music originating from New York or offering a description of the brand.

As a result of Festival Walk’s location near numerous schools, Kiehl’s introduced a new retail concept for the brand: a baby corner outfitted with toys and decorated with Polaroid pictures of customers’ children. This is a first for Kiehl’s worldwide, the company said.

Another Kiehl’s first from Asia is an offering of whitening skin care products. These include a botanical cleansing cream, a toner, and a moisture fluid. Kiehl’s doesn’t have an exact date for a U.S. launch of these products, but they have recently debuted in Canada.

The Festival Walk shop, which opened its doors in June, is one of 14 stores Kiehl’s has throughout Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea. The company has no plans at the moment for additional shops in Hong Kong.
