NEW YORK — Michael Kors was an island in a stream of fragrance buyers and industry executives Friday at Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship here.

More than 500 shoppers — and an impressive list of beauty and retail executives, including Saks’ Ron Frasch, Deborah Walters and Kate Oldham, and Estée Lauder’s Leonard Lauder, Evelyn Lauder, Fabrice Weber and Veronique Gabai-Pinsky — were on hand to welcome the ebullient designer, who was there to sign bottles of his newest fragrance, Island Michael Kors.

“With fashion appearances, you never get the variety of people you do at a fragrance event,” said Kors with a chuckle. “When you buy clothes, it’s all about ‘Does this look good?’ With fragrance, it’s all about emotion.”

And the shoppers — who ranged from teenage hipsters to suburban soccer moms — proved that theory. In fact, many marched up to meet Kors decked out in the bright turquoise that is the scent’s signature color. While neither Lauder nor Saks would comment on sales, industry sources estimated that the scent racked up sales of about $20,000 that day. 

Kors noted that he’ll be making several other appearances this month to support the scent, including an April 28 appearance at Neiman Marcus in Dallas and an April 29 appearance at Nordstrom in Seattle.

“I asked my people if they were sure that they didn’t want to consider a Honolulu store,” cracked Kors, who at one point had joked that he’d only make appearances in stores on islands. “But they figured that Seattle had as much water as any island.”

Revlon Taps Executive VP
NEW YORK — Revlon Inc. appointed Mary Massimo to the position of executive vice president of human resources on Monday. In her new post, she will oversee the company’s worldwide h.r. organization, and is charged with aligning Revlon’s workforce with its growth strategy. She will report to Jack Stahl, Revlon’s president and chief executive officer.

Prior to Revlon, Massimo was executive vice president at GreenPoint Financial Corp., where she is credited with developing an h.r. strategy that integrated the company’s three major business lines during a period of rapid growth. She has also held senior posts at companies such as Rockefeller & Co., Swiss Bank Corp. and Drexel.

L’Oreal Names Florian Chanet
PARIS — L’Oreal has formally appointed Florian Chanet, 36, managing director of its luxury products division for France. Chanet had been working as acting managing director since January, when he replaced Martin Guillou, who had passed away suddenly. Chanet joined L’Oreal in 1997 and held a variety of positions in the company’s luxury products division before heading its travel retail division in Europe, where he managed a succession of brands, including Helena Rubinstein, Biotherm and Lancome.

Van der Straeten Meets Guerlain
PARIS — After collaborating with Parfums Christian Dior to create the J’Adore fragrance bottle, Herve Van der Straeten is said to be working with another of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s cosmetics brands — Guerlain. Van der Straeten, a designer in multiple industries, reportedly created new packaging for Guerlain lipsticks, which are due to be launched in August. It’s a busy time for the designer: A jewelry collection he created to be sold exclusively in some Parisian museums was launched two weeks ago.
