Beauty Brand Founders On Their Mothers’ Best Advice

We asked beauty entrepreneurs to dish on the best advice their moms ever gave them.

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, we asked beauty entrepreneurs to dish on the best advice their moms ever gave them, plus their foolproof gift ideas.

Leslie Blodgett, executive chairwoman of Bare Escentuals and founder of BareMinerals

Mother knows best: “Think for yourself. Be independent. You can be anything you want to be.”

Go-to gift for mom: “My mom still kind of scares me, so I’m careful with my suggestions. She was slow to convert to BareMinerals in the Nineties, but she’s been using it for at least 18 years. That’s the big one.”

Jo Horgan, founder of Mecca Brands

Mother knows best: “My mother taught me dermal diligence: to always take great care of and pride in my skin from the earliest age.”

Go-to gift for mom: “One of her favorite things is for me to take her into our flagship Mecca Cosmetica. We sit down with a glass of Champagne and I watch her dive into all the new products. Her favorite is Mecca Cosmetica Elixir Body Oil.”

Jessica Alba, cofounder of The Honest Company

Go-to gift for mom: “There is nothing more heartfelt, more loving, more beautiful than a letter telling your mother how much you love her and how much her love means to you.”

Sonia Kashuk, founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty

Mother knows best: “Have drive and determination, and always go after what you want. Anything is attainable and possible — every dream can become a reality.”

Go-to gift for mom: “Any Sonia Kashuk products. She loves nothing more than when I send her the latest from my line — my mom is my biggest fan!”

Marla Malcolm Beck, founder of Bluemercury

Mother knows best: “Wash your face every night and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. There wasn’t a night she didn’t slather a cream all over her face.”

Go-to gift for mom: “A gigantic box of La Mer. She was a La Mer addict.”

Alli Webb, founder of Drybar

Mother knows best: “From the time I was a little girl, I saw how my mom carried herself with such confidence and self-assurance. She was an incredible role model.”

Go-to gift for mom: “She also taught me to pamper myself, something she has always loved. So my go-to gift for her is always a massage or facial.”

Mally Roncal, founder of Mally Beauty

Mother knows best: “Treat everyone like a superstar. She lived by the ‘Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have done unto you.’ She demanded that we always treat everyone with respect. And to this day I carry that on to my daughters.”

Go-to gift for mom: “She was a drag queen, just like me! She loved everything, all types of makeup. But, if I had to choose one, I would say eyeshadow. She loved all different colors of shadows.”

Anja Rubik, founder of Original

Mother knows best: “My mother always tells me, ‘It’s better to regret something you have done than not doing or trying it at all.’”

Go-to gift for mom: “Always perfume.”

Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter

Mother knows best: “My mother lived with an illness from the age of 22, when she was diagnosed, until she passed away at age 60. She had polymyositis, a collagen vascular disease, and had to take steroids and harsh drugs for years. She had very weak legs and muscles and couldn’t exercise, run or cross her legs. But, she never complained. My mother was always a the-glass-is-half-full type of person and raised me in that way.”

Go-to gift for mom: “Her favorite beauty gift, once I began to make products, was my Ocean body line. She adored that scent. She said it was the first scent she could stand to wear. It relaxed her and made her feel better.”
