Clive Christian, which touts itself as maker of the world’s most expensive perfume, has made its first venture into downtown Manhattan.
The stately luxury perfume house known for its British heritage and high prices — its most costly item is the 1.6-o.z. bottle of its number-one women’s perfume spray, which retails for $865 — earlier this month launched a stand-alone counter on the fragrance floor of Saks Fifth Avenue at the Brookfield Place mall. With its foray into the Financial District, the brand is hoping to attract a “potentially younger, internationally aware customer — a key target for Clive Christian,” said Victoria Christian, the perfumer’s brand ambassador and spokesman, and also the daughter of Clive. The new door will carry all 14 stockkeeping units by the brand, as well as a travel set.
Also available at the downtown Saks are Clive Christian’s latest two fragrances, which were introduced in the U.K. on Sept. 1 — each of the brand’s launches are released in pairs, one for men and one for women. Called Noble VII Cosmos Flower, the feminine scent, and Noble VII Rock Rose, masculine scent, the Noble VII pair was inspired by the gardens at Clive Christian’s Queen-Anne-style home. Cosmos Flower contains notes of caramel, cocoa, leather, plum, ylang-ylang, jasmine and pink pepper. Rock Rose is a fougère scent that blends bergamot, black pepper and neroli with vilolet, lavender, herbs, patchouli and rock rose. They are packaged in a black matte bottle with the same crown-shaped topper as the rest of the perfumes in Clive Christian’s range.

The new fragrances are rolling out this month to the rest of Clive Christan’s distribution base in the U.S. — it is currently available in some 40 doors, including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman and other Saks Fifth Avenue locations. It is also available for purchase from these retailers’ web sites.
Christian divulged that Clive Christian was the top-selling fragrance brand on opening day at Saks Fifth Avenue Brookfield Place, though Saks could not confirm or deny by press time.
Clive Christian is focused on expanding its U.S. presence — Clive Christian the man, who is an interior designer as well as a perfumer, has scouted a location for his first New York space, a showroom in SoHo, Christian said. A stand-alone retail location is likely not in the cards for now as the brand ramps up its U.S. presence. “We’re working toward growing our U.S. business with a focus on our department store partners,” Christian said.
