Cumming Kicks Off Extracts

Now in its 18th edition, Extracts will feature 120 exhibitors, from aromatherapy products to skin care to fragrance suppliers.

NEW YORK — Extracts, the biannual trade show catering to the personal care and wellness industry, will kick off tomorrow at Penn Plaza Pavilion, a new location, complete with a personal appearance from actor Alan Cumming.

Now in its 18th edition, Extracts will feature 120 exhibitors, from aromatherapy products to skin care to fragrance suppliers. In addition, 10 personal care companies from Australia will be exhibiting as part of the Australian Trade Commission.

While Extracts usually holds its shows in April and October, this year’s shows have been moved to August and January to coincide with the New York International Gift Fair, making it convenient for buyers to attend two shows in one trip. Housed in the Jacob K. Javits Center — Extracts’ former location — the Gift Fair is expected to feature about 2,800 exhibitors and attract some 43,000 attendees. As a result of the new dates, planners for Extracts are expecting attendance for the show to almost double to about 10,000 people.

“The event’s strategic co-location with the New York International Gift Fair will create access to a greater number of resources and buying opportunities for all participating retailers,” stated Rita Malek, show manager for Extracts.

Extracts will run through Tuesday, Aug. 16, and is regularly attended by buyers from specialty and department stores, distributors, spas and hotels, as well as the consumer and trade press. Companies such as Erbaviva, Vermont Naturals and Sabon et Parfum Services are expected to participate this time around.

Alan Cumming, perhaps best known for his roles in the film version of the comic “X-Men 2” and the Broadway show “Cabaret,” will take part in a “celebrity presentation” Saturday on the show floor at 2 p.m. to present his first scent, Cumming the Fragrance, on which he collaborated with perfumer Christopher Brosius. Cumming will be joined by Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia and her daughter, actress Catherine Oxenberg, to support their fragrances, E and Jelisaveta, in conjunction with one of the show’s exhibitors, Kaos Candles.
