MILAN — At an assembly here on June 19, Unipro, the Italian association of cosmetics companies, approved a name change for the organization, which will now be referred to as Cosmetica Italia.

At the meeting, industry leaders including ITF’s Giorgia Martone, Rottapharm Madaus’ Luigi Rovati and Mavive’s Marco Vidal spoke about the importance of tradition and passion in keeping family businesses running during the economic crisis.

In a statement, Cosmetica Italia president Fabio Rossello said the Italian cosmetics industry “is lucid in its understanding of the contraction of domestic consumption, and aware of consumers’ move toward new price points and retail channels.”

Noting that Italian consumers spent 9.6 billion euros on cosmetics in 2012, or about $12.7 billion at current exchange — an on-year decrease of 1.8 percent — Rossello said that consumers had “only marginally given up on cosmetics purchases, which are seen as essential everyday consumer goods.”
