PARIS — Amid swirling reports that Shiseido is phasing out its Stephane Marais beauty brand, questions have also arisen about his status at the company’s Cle de Peau label, where he has been the color creator since 1991.

A spokesman for Shiseido has portrayed the situation as a routine reappraisal of the celebrity makeup artist’s position, but there is a lack of ringing endorsement.

The spokesman said: “The Cle De Peau marketing team is currently working on 2006 spring-summer promotion, and nothing has been officially decided, including its relationship with Mr. Marais. This is an usual process which we have to go through every time we plan the new promotion.”

As reported, it was learned that Shiseido has already pulled the plug on Marais’ signature beauty line, which was launched three years ago. And executives question whether Iunx, a beauty collection and minimalist boutique by that name that Shiseido has been backing in Paris for two years, will carry on for the long term.
