HANDS ON: Pacific World Corp. has acquired Fing’rs, one of its biggest competitors in the artificial nail and nail care category. Pacific World, maker of Nailene and Revlon brands, and Fing’rs, maker of the Fing’rs brand of products, are both based in California and look to realize operating efficiencies in product manufacturing, innovation and global distribution. Reports of a pending deal were reported in these pages on Feb. 11.
RAINCHECK: Pathways to Real Beauty has hit a roadblock. Organizers of the new consumer beauty expo — which last year fell smack dab in the middle of fashion week — have postponed this year’s show, originally scheduled for Sept. 9 through Sept. 11 in New York. Suzanne Grayson, founder and managing partner of Pathways, put the 2005 show on hold after its venue, Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, was unable to move the dates away from Sept. 11 and fashion week. “Both of which proved to create distractions and competition for your time,” she wrote in an e-mail to last year’s show attendees. She continued, “We will shoot for 2006 in New York City or perhaps another venue. We will keep you posted of any developments as they unfold.” Last year’s inaugural event attracted 161 exhibitors — touting 2,000 different brands — and attracted more than 21,450 visitors.
GLAMOUR POWER: One of Bill Boraczek’s first roles among his new duties as senior vice president of marketing for Sally Hansen was to welcome the winners of the Best of You contest to New York for a luncheon at Condé Nast headquarters this past Monday. Best of You is a partnership between Glamour magazine and Sally Hansen, which recognizes women across the nation who have done something to make a positive difference in the world. Boraczek, a five-year veteran of Sally Hansen, was promoted to his new role last week following Del’s official completion of its merger with DLI Acquisition Corp. The honored women were: Jennifer Acosta of San Jose, Calif., who was born with a heart defect but has always set her sights on helping others. Despite two open-heart surgeries, she is a volunteer for groups ranging from the Harvest Food Bank to the American Cancer Society’s Walk-a-thon. Carol Barr of Damascus, Va., has used her professional nursing skills to start an all-volunteer rescue squad in her hometown. She has written requests and spearheaded efforts to raise more than $500,000 in grants, donations and fund-raisers. Annette Brien of Boston, Mass. is a sexual assault nurse examiner. She provides treatment to female victims of assault, offering compassion while gathering evidence needed for prosecution. Dana Hallgren of Colorado Springs, Colo., is an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force who provides online drug rehabilitation assistance while also volunteering at the base’s Airman’s Club.

LOLA’S QVC DEBUT: Lola Cosmetics recently launched on QVC with a one-hour program featuring Victoria Jackson, president and founder of the brand. For the last year and a half, Lola has been featured on QVC during a spate of five-minute segments, or a “testing period,” according to Jackson. She said that the brand was able to sell between $9,000 and $12,000 per minute during those brief stints. Judging by those results, Jackson said the official QVC launch could boost Lola’s sales by $5 million in the first year. “There’s no denying the power of QVC,” said Jackson. “What I can sell in an hour [on QVC] can take you six months through boutiques.” During Lola’s QVC premiere, several products were launched, including a Lola Loves Lip Trio, a Complexion Perfection Make-Up Kit and a Lolafy Your Eyes Three-Piece Color kit. Jackson said the line did about $400,000 in the first hour. Lola also is currently seeking additional presence in specialty stores.
BATH & BODY WORKS HONORS: Limited Brands’ Bath & Body Works division will be honored with the Art of Packaging Award. The retailer’s chief executive, Neil Fiske, will accept the honors at a black tie gala at New York’s University Club on May 10, an event that is sponsored by Pratt Institute and Luxe Pack Monaco. The soirée benefits the Marc Rosen Scholarship for Graduate Design.
BIOTHERM BENCHMARK: Skin care brand Biotherm hit the $1 million mark in sales volume in less than two years at a major New York department store, which requested it not be named, last month. “We’re thrilled because it’s symbolic of what’s going on with this brand,” said Roberta Weiss, senior vice president of marketing for the L’Oréal Group-owned Biotherm USA. Weiss said that Biotherm is currently in expansion mode, and such a financial milestone is a sign of things to come: The brand launched its e-commerce Web site in October, which Weiss said is on track to become the brand’s number one outlet. Biotherm also opened its first U.S. store in Glendale, Calif., in December and is currently increasing distribution for its men’s line, Biotherm Homme. “Hitting that million-dollar mark is the beginning of [being] on people’s radar screen,” said Weiss.
MCEVOY APPEARANCE: Makeup artist Trish McEvoy will make a by-appointment-only appearance at Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. next Thursday. McEvoy will be on hand to offer advice on beauty looks for spring 2005.
OSCAR WEDDING: Come May, there will be a new addition to Oscar de la Renta’s home fragrance collection — a white candle called Wedding. The candle, which is produced by the same licensee that makes de la Renta’s home fragrance line, Slatkin & Co., features olfactory accords of lily of the valley, white peony and green notes. Wedding will be carried at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and C.O. Bigelow and has been priced at $38.
