Spring 2018 Beauty From Fashion Week: Makeup, Hair, Nails

Photos of makeup, hair and nail color ideas for spring 2018 from the runways of fashion week.

New York — When it comes to spring 2018 beauty trends from New York Fashion Week, it all boils down to three categories: glossy textures, graphic motifs and braids — lots of braids.

Glossiness — for hair and skin — is one of the key spring 2018 beauty trends dominating runways. While glowy skin has been in for several seasons, this year artists are taking it a step further to straight-up glossy. For hair, it’s coming in the form of the wet look — featuring slicked back, product-coated strands.

For makeup, it’s all about glossy skin and eyes.

“It’s the next generation of highlight – it’s not just a highlight, it’s glossy,” said James Kaliardos backstage at Baja East, where he led makeup for MAC.

“Sexy shine” is how Kaliardos described the look. “I’m glad we’re not doing a matte look. Just to be sort of shiny and add that extra texture – it’s almost like a piece of clothing, putting on something – putting this shine on, and it adds another element to the look. It looks super cool.”

“I know there’s a big trend for shiny foundation in Asia – they stay shiny … which is so interesting that it’s coming from there because I feel like Asia was so obsessed with powder. So now, it’s that hyper shine – it’s probably coming from photo-retouched pictures. Everyone has that glistening shine.”

To get the look at Baja East, Kaliardos used pearl and copper highlighters (depending on models’ skin tones) and strobe glaze broadly on the face — not just on top of cheekbones. That included the forehead, cheekbones and eye lids for a high-shine effect.

Glossy lids essentially opened New York Fashion Week, as models at Tom Ford sported gloss over liner last Wednesday. It also appeared at Chromat, where makeup artist Felicia Thomas added it to models just before they hit the catwalk. Bronzed-yet-glossy lids were at Brandon Maxwell, and Dianne Kendall used MAC’s lip glass on models’ eyes at Prabal Gurung, from lash line to brow bone.

The beauty look at Prabal was all about moisture – models were meant to look like they went from pool to runway. Hair-wise, Anthony Turner for Wella used large dollops of gel to slick hair back, and spray on the midlengths and ends to make sure it didn’t look too dry there.

Hair was also slicked back at Baja East, Creatures of Comfort as Jason Wu.
