The benefits of Thai massage have been espoused for centuries as a way to detoxify the body, slow down aging and improve one’s overall health. Bangkok is now home to dozens of beauty clinics that are run privately by physicians or in one of the city’s first-world hospitals, seeking to appeal to Thais and foreign visitors.
Treatments on offer include laser, blood analysis, hydrotherapy, hair-mineral analysis, urine organic-acid analysis, food allergy testing, adrenal stress tests and a variety of skin care services. Even the government has gotten into the act, with the Department of Export promoting Thailand as the center in Asia for health and beauty.
The cosmetics industry is responding with a variety of treatment-oriented products: ICC International recently launched BSC Vital White, while others, seeking to appeal to increasingly health-conscious consumers, are offering products containing natural or organic ingredients that include milk, cacao, honey, olives, shea butter, vitamins, Japanese cherry blossoms, lemon extracts and orange peel oil.
“The cosmetics, spa and plastic surgery service industry, along with the concept of medical tourism in Thailand is certainly growing and will continue to do so in the coming years, for both domestic and international consumers,” said Euromonitor’s Yvonne Kok.
