NEW YORK  — In honor of the opening of “Berlin Metropolis: 1918-1933” on Thursday, Oct. 1, the Neue Galerie Design Shop has partnered with Aerin Beauty, Aerin Lauder’s beauty brand, to unveil an exclusive new lipstick that will be available the same day.

Named “Berlin Nights,” the limited-edition red shade is inspired by the young, independent and stylish women of Berlin’s Golden Age during the Twenties, said Lauder.

“The Aerin lipstick created — a bold yet classic red — draws inspiration from the strong, stylish women during this era,” said Lauder, founder and creative director of the brand that bears her name. “The image and lipstick evoke a feeling of intrigue and a night out in the dynamic city of Berlin.”

Berlin Nights (the lipstick) features a luxe texture, medium coverage, and a shine finish, noted Lauder. Packaged in a golden rectangular case, the custom-designed black box is decorated with Christian Schad’s portrait, “Lotte.” The $34 lipstick will be available at the Neue Galerie Design Shop and online at

According to Neue Galerie, images of the “Neue Frau,” or New Woman, created during this period offer a vivid impression of Berlin’s flourishing culture of pleasure and consumption between the wars. The modern woman of Berlin, drawn from every social class and occupation, was commonly depicted as an active and engaged figure.

Visual markers of the “Neue Frau” in fine art, photography, fashion magazines, and on the silver screen included fashionable dress and conspicuous makeup. The New Woman wore vibrant lipstick, sported a trendy Bubikopf (bob haircut) and wore dresses cut above the knee. The subject of “Lotte” (1927-28), was a friend of Schad who worked as a milliner in a hat shop below his Berlin apartment.

This is Aerin Beauty’s second collaboration with the Neue Galerie; the first, in March of this year, was created around Gustav Klimt’s “The Woman in Gold,” a classic of fin-de-siècle Vienna depicting Adele Bloch-Bauer, which the museum acquired in 2006.
