NEW YORK — The suburb of Yonkers is not known for being a beauty destination — unless one is meeting up with François Nars and Steven Klein.

The duo, who are collaborating on a limited-edition color cosmetics collection out this fall, celebrated with a cocktail event and artistic installation at the historic Alder Manor Tuesday night. Designed in partnership with Etienne Russo, Nars and Klein created an immersive experience, intended to bring the world of the NARS Steven Klein line to life through a series of artistic vignettes within the manor.

Guests — who included Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Wang, Gina Gershon, Anna Ewers, Amanda Lepore and Coco Rocha — explored the manor experiencing Klein’s work room by room. In some rooms, images were projected onto walls; in a second-floor room with an empty pool, two sex dolls cavorted. Each of the images represented an inspiration or mood for the collaboration.

“Knowing Steven and his work, I thought, let’s do a collection around his art, because photography really is an art,” Nars told WWD. “And I felt like he deserved to be recognized more, and I think the combination of having makeup around him was a good idea. It isn’t necessarily an expected one.

“You don’t look at his images and instantly think about makeup,” Nars continued. “When he was first approached about the collaboration, he responded right away. I think it was unexpected for him, and we both realized this idea was something very different. I choose artists that don’t compromise – that is key. They don’t have any boundaries or limits to their work, they follow their instincts and are true to themselves.”

Nars’ past collaborations have included makeup collections featuring Guy Bourdin and Andy Warhol. The Nars Steven Klein collaboration will drop in Nars boutiques on Oct.15 and in Nars’ full distribution on Nov. 1.
