Actor John Boyega on Being Jo Malone London’s First Gent, Family and Next Steps

The "Star Wars" actor has taken a turn for Jo Malone London in a short film.

LONDON — One minute he’s in outer space, and the next he’s back in south London, filling his home with candles. Actor John Boyega certainly gets around, and his latest gig is a campaign film for Jo Malone London as the brand’s first “gent.”

It has been a busy few months for the actor, who stars in the crime drama “A Naked Singularity,” set to be released next year, and who is prepping for the “Star Wars” premiere, which comes out Dec. 23 in the U.K.

He’s taking on an even bigger role for Jo Malone London, directing the campaign film as well as appearing in it. It takes place at his new house in Peckham, south London.

Boyega said he immediately knew he wanted to use the campaign as a platform to highlight his background, family and his friends. Shot in Burgess Park in Peckham, where Boyega grew up, the film shows the actor strolling through the area, dancing with friends and spending time with his family.

It features the actor’s close friends from school, college and friends he’s made during his career. “There are several people in this video that have either given me a place to say in L.A. while I haven’t had one, or just have been consistent in our friendship for years.

“There’s a mixture of things you see me do in the film, you see me in a professional environment on a film set, then with family and it’s about breaking free of the concept of ‘going back or returning to your roots’ but more about the roots existing with this new side of my life. It’s not a chapter that stops,” Boyega added.

Scented candles also play a key role in the movie. “You know how when you go into your room that you’ve just cleaned and you put a candle in the corner? It’s that feeling, and the aesthetic of them as well that I really like,” the actor said.

Boyega has always been big on candles. He started collecting them a few years back. “You know you’re getting older when the first thing you want to do is smell like your dad, and then I started traveling and started collecting different ouds. We also filmed ‘Star Wars’ in Jordan, and they are big on ouds there. So when Jo Malone London approached me, I was really just attracted to taking on the role,” he added.

Boyega is Jo Malone London’s first male brand ambassador and he joins Jo Malone London Girls Karen Elson and Poppy Delevingne, who was named the luxury fragrance brand’s first ambassador in 2015.

As for his future projects, Boyega said he’s taking some time out to strategize.

“I’m in a position that I haven’t been in a long time, which is that for a whole year I’m free and that’s really exciting. It hasn’t happened since ‘Star Wars’ started, so I’m excited to use this time to do some script reading to decide what I want to explore next,” Boyega said, adding that he’s looking into a few dramas and science fiction roles.
