AFRICAN SCENT: Danielle Ryan, Irish businesswoman and granddaughter of the founder of budget airline Ryanair, was in Milan on Tuesday to present the first perfumed candle line and new fragrances of her lifestyle brand Roads. The event was held at the Hotel 3 Rooms located in Carla Sozzani’s 10 Corso Como concept store.

The company of the former actress incorporates film, publishing and fragrances and introduced its first fragrance line last year, comprising 10 core scents and is now presenting four new fragrances, inspired by Africa and set to launch in October.

Ryan, who lived in Nigeria as a child when her father was a pilot for Nigeria Airways, said that she was curious to see what was happening in Africa also from a business point of view.

“We were looking at things, at what’s interesting, what’s new and little bits of Africa kept popping up. I wanted to look at what’s happening with urban, contemporary, cool Africa,” she said, adding that Nigeria was becoming a force that is still growing.

According to Ryan, the new collection is a collaboration of African culture, literature, art and dance, and the four new fragrances boast names such as “I am Dance,” “Big Sky,” “Afropolis” and “Past Presence.” Whereas the 10 core fragrances come in white, minimal packaging, each box of the four new fragrances serves as a gallery for a different illustrator, such as Lynnie Zulu, whose clients include Coca Cola, Monki and MAC Cosmetics.

Asked about her new creative venture with scented candles, Ryan described the process of creating a scent for a room rather than for a person as very particular.

“It was a very different way of thinking to say this is now not me that wanted to smell, it’s the room or the atmosphere and you also have to think about where does that sit with the diversity of people’s rooms,” she said.

The five candles, ranging from the heaviest scent, “Black Door,” to the lightest called “Paper Pink,” are made out of a mineral and vegetable wax, manufactured in the U.K. and last approximately 40 hours.

The new Roads candles and fragrances, globally distributed by Intertrade Group, will be available in the Avery Perfume Galleries worldwide as well as in luxury stores in 52 countries, including U.S. Barneys New York locations, Excelsior in Italy, Galeries Lafayette in Berlin and Selfridges London. The 50-ml. eau de parfum is priced at 98 euros, or $155, whereas the candle is priced at 55 euros, or about $68.

Ryan’s company Roads Entertainment has 12 films in pre-production; her publishing company will release 12 books next year, whereas for the fragrances, she still likes to keep a tab on her ideas for the next line.

“I have one idea, but I will keep it under wraps for now. It is really still in my head,” she said laughing, and added, “I haven’t even said it to anyone yet. I’m happy with where the fragrances are and certainly in the future we will be looking at collaborations.”
