Pierre Fabre Required to Sell Dermocosmetics Online

The French group had refused for years to have such products e-tailed.

PARIS — Groupe Pierre Fabre is required to sell its dermocosmetics online through authorized distributors, ruled the appeals court here on Thursday.

The maker of skin and hair care brands such as Avène, Ducray, Klorane and René Furterer, had refused to retail such products over the Internet for years.

The court decision stems from a case, beginning in 2006, when France’s competition council told dermocosmetic makers to allow for their products’ sale online through authorized distributors.

“Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmétique remained the only company in its sector to remain faithful to the values of health professionals, firstly to the quality of advice for consumers,” the company said in a statement on Friday.

The Paris court agreed that certain criteria must be filled for the firm’s dermocosmetic products to be sold online. These include that consumers have ongoing access to advice from a trained pharmacist and that the group’s products are presented in a high-quality environment.

In 2011, Groupe Pierre Fabre’s beauty sales were 993 million euros, or $1.38 billion at average exchange for the period.
