NBTY Inc., a supplier of vitamins, nutritional supplements and sports nutrition, has entered into an agreement to acquire Dr. Organic, a naturally positioned skin-care line based in the U.K.
The deal is expected to close later this year. The terms were not disclosed. The Dr. Organic brand, which was first sold exclusively at NBTY’s Holland & Barrett retail chain in the U.K., debuted in the U.S. under the Organic Doctor name and is sold through NBTY’s Vitamin World retail division. NBTY plans to expand distribution into U.S. mass doors.
The timing could be fortuitous, with Nielsen projecting an increase in the natural beauty segment of 24 percent over the last two years — a pace that is expected to continue through 2016. “We have a tremendous opportunity to expand our health and wellness portfolio and to broaden the distribution,” said NBTY president and chief executive officer Steve Cahillane. “We believe the acquisition will allow us to accelerate NBTY’s entry into the mass-market beauty and skin-care category particularly in the U.S., an area which we believe can be an important growth engine for our business.” The company also owns Nature’s Bounty Optimal Solutions product line, which is sold in mass retailers including Rite Aid, Walgreens and Target .
All Dr. Organic products are free from parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial fragrances, petrochemicals, genetically modified organisms, animal ingredients and animal testing, according to the company. Among the best sellers are Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo, Manuka Honey Body Butter, Coconut Oil Moisture Melt and Organic Snail Gel. Prices range from $13 to $30.
