Twenty-eight women sat with their eyes glued to Tata Harper as she took them step by step through her eponymous skin-care collection at City Chemist in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. Harper is renowned for her Master Class sessions which help educate women about her 100 percent natural and non-toxic products.
“I don’t wear that much makeup,” Harper explained. “It is more important to have really good skin care.” In addition to teaching how to use her skin-care products, she also sampled her lip, cheek and aromatherapy items. “Breathe the scent in five times,” she advised. “It takes at least three times to really experience the scent.” The Master Class was held in the beauty department at the store and attracted many onlookers who watched as the participants experimented with products such as a Nourishing Oil Cleanser and Rejuvenating Serum while hearing skin-care tips from Harper. Following the demonstration and chat, customers queued up to purchase the items which range in price from $25 for a Be Fierce Sheer Lip Treatment to over $1,000 for a 10-piece collection.
“The event filled up immediately. I have the perfect customer for Tata’s line in this store,” said Diana Dolling-Ross, executive store director for NYCO, which owns the bustling Brooklyn store along with other sites in Brooklyn, and White’s Apothecary in the Hamptons. Dolling-Ross carefully surveys the clientele in each of her locations, canvassing shoppers for brands they want. What sells in Williamsburg, she said, is different than Southampton. “We’re getting requests for so many indie brands at Williamsburg and they like to mix mass brands like NYX and E.l.f. in, too.”
