SOCK IT TO ME: Stores specializing in socks are a rarity. Nevertheless, United Legwear & Apparel Co., a New York-based firm which designs, manufactures and markets legwear, bodywear, apparel and accessories for such brands as Puma and Skechers, has launched a brand called Fun Socks and will open the first two Fun Sock shops on Thursday.
“Socks are an essential in everyone’s wardrobe, but they don’t have to be boring,” said Isaac E. Ash, founder, president and chief executive of ULAC. “At a moment in time when life can feel serious and impersonal, Fun Socks encourages customers to find moments of playfulness.”
Fun Socks is opening a 125-square-foot “mini-emporium” with floor-to-ceiling display at 436 West Broadway in the SoHo section of Manhattan, and a 600-square-foot shop in Venice, Calif., at 1420 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, with a “fun house” theme featuring a large mural wall changing seasonally and a “tricked out” fun car. The mural was created by multimedia artist Max Rippon.
The Fun Socks collection offers more than 150 women’s and men’s styles in legwear and accessories, has a web site, funsocks.com and is sold at more than 90 retail doors.
