Asian shares ended mixed Thursday, lacking a clear direction after Chinese stocks posted significant gains a day earlier.

Shanghai’s SSE inched up 0.1 percent to end at 3,004. It was the outlier as Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.7 percent to end at 16,759 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.1 percent to end at 20,777.

Chow Tai Fook fell 0.6 percent to close at 4.85 Hong Kong dollars. Fast Retailing slid 1.3 percent to end at 36,020 yen. Shiseido lost 2 percent to finish at 2,512 yen. Global Brands bucked the trend to gain 2.2 percent and end at 0.940 Hong Kong dollars.
