Despite positive direction from Wall Street, Wednesday was a mixed bag for Asian indices and a negative day for several blue chip retailers.

Shanghai’s SSE grew 1.1 percent to end the session at 2,867 while other markets languished in the red. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 lost 1.4 percent to finish at 15,837 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 1 percent to end at 18,924.

The day’s biggest losers included Fast Retailing, which dropped 4.8 percent to end at 31,240 yen. Chow Tai Fook slumped 6.2 percent to end at 4.73 Hong Kong dollars.

Stocks posting more modest declines included Esprit, which fell 1.8 percent to 7.46 Hong Kong dollars, and Isetan Mitsukoshi, which slipped 1.4 percent to 1,292 yen.
